Who am I?

Group of children and an adult, possibly a teacher, sitting and standing on steps outside a building during the daytime.

I was very fortunate to be trained by Mr Chng Kiam Choon as a competitive swimmer for 10 years (1983-1993) and represented Singapore in Nationals School back in 1990s. Generally placed 3rd and 4th placing in National Schools. Specialised in 50m Freestyle and Butterfly. Being able to swim is very different to being able to teach.

It was Mr Chng that taught me the importance of hardwork, and being anal about perfect strokes. I was only able to see it’s value when I am a coach myself.

In order to ensure I really know how to teach, i have attached myself to 4-5 schools over a span of 2-3yrs, on top of being given good advice by my mentor, Mr Chng Kiam Choon. Sometimes attaching myself to more than 1 school to see how they teach, and more importantly whether i have the right skills to coach. And i must say that all the schools were impressed with my skillset to coach the basics thou i came from competitive background. Even the toddler school was impressed with my ability to handle the babies.

I have been coaching since 2012, bringing many students through the Swimsafer programs. The fastest student finished from zero to Swimsafer Gold in 1 year. I have also been coaching kids/adults who came from other coaches, that took a long time to swim, and brought them to enjoy swimming.

I have named my school Swim Affinity as I see students coming to join me NOT as a coincidence, rather an affinity. An affinity to have this swimming journey together. The same affinity I had with my coach, Mr Chng, I am now creating this affinity with my students.
